Glossary

Hey everyone! This page will feature terms, words and phrases that may be used throughout this site. I hope to one day transform this blog into a online resource for all things nail related, so this glossary will expand as the blog does. Keep checking back for more terms and if any phrases confuses you on this blog- feel free to comment!

P.S. All terms are defined by me unless otherwise stated!

3/Three Free- There are three toxins that are found in nail polish formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP. Polishes that are 3 free (such as Butter London) are free of these toxins.

Haul- This term is used often in the beauty blogosphere to describe recent additions to a beauty lover’s collection.

Mani- Short for manicure. See Manicure.

Manicure – A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands performed at home or in a nail salon by a licensed professional nail technician or manicurist. A manicure treatment is not only a treatment for the natural nails but also for the hands (wikipedia.com)

Matte- A completely shine free polish finish. The matte look can be achieved by applying a matte top coat, or by using matte nail polish.

Minx- Minx is a solid film with an adhesive back that is heat activated. The heat gives Minx the conformability to fit over the compound curves of nails and seals it onto the nail bed. Minx is brewed in North County, San Diego, California. The patent pending proprietary material Minx is made of can be easily removed with heat by either the manicurist or the client. (Minxnails.com)

Satin- Like matte finish, with a hit of shine- not enough to be considered a regular glossy polish. Most matte finishes develop a satin finish after a couple of days, especially if lotion is used.

Swatches- The formal definition of the word swatch is a sample, or a patch of material or surface. The term swatch is used on this blog and in the nail world as a sample of nail colors on the nail.

Varnista- A term made up by ME, like stylista used to describe anyone up on trends, fashion, and style (of course pertaining to the nail polish world). i.e. Nita is such a varnista, she’s always up on the latest nail trends like Minx and Shellac!
